Fallston boys finish sweep of counties

The Baltimore Sun

Fallston completed its fourth consecutive sweep of the Harford County Swimming Championships last night. The boys had little trouble winning the event at Magnolia Middle School, one night after the girls also won.

The Cougars captured the top spot with 346 points, pulling away late to rout C. Milton Wright (182). Fallston's boys and girls combined for 635 points, also easily outdistancing the Mustangs (422) for the overall title.

Fallston is loaded with talented swimmers and scored points in each event. The Cougars' senior class is used to winning; the Fallston boys and girls have a 52-0 record over their high school careers.

The Fallston boys won the championship at the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association's first official state meet last year. Depth carried the Cougars then, and it carried them to an easy victory yesterday.

"That's what we look for with every event," said Sheri Huppenthal, who coaches Fallston with Jeff DeHart. "Our depth is how we won with the girls, and that's how we won tonight."

Fallston's Jack Gottschalk, Bradley Huppenthal and Paul Zoli led the way. Gottschalk won the 50- and 500-yard freestyle and swam on the victorious winning 200 medley relay.

Huppenthal, son of the Fallston coach, won the 100 butterfly and took second in the 200 IM. He also swam on the winning 400 freestyle relay and the 200 medley relay.

Zoli captured the 100 and 200 freestyle and swam on the winning 400 freestyle relay and the 200 freestyle relay that took second place.

Nick Tomechko also swam well, competing in the 200 medley relay, 100 backstroke (second) and the 200 IM (third). He has had a tough road back this winter after suffering serious injuries in a car accident last fall, but his contributions were a key part of Fallston's victory.
