CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. -- When Gary Williams left here in the spring of 1986 for Ohio State after a successful four-year run at Boston College, he was one of college basketball's up-and-coming coaches. He had 148 career wins at the time.

When Williams left Conte Forum last night after a 70-65 victory by Maryland, he had become the seventh active Division I coach to reach 600 wins in what is now a 30-year career.
