Howard man, hit by pickup on Route 108, is fatally hurt

A man was struck by a pickup truck and killed early yesterday morning in Ellicott City, the third pedestrian fatality this year in Howard County, police said.

Brinn Kenastian Green, 20, of the 9800 block of Route 108 was walking north in the northbound lane of Route 108 just before Brothers Partnership Court about 6 a.m., Howard County police said. The driver of a 2008 Ford F250, Earnest Wayne Foster, 59, of Savage was unable to avoid Green, who was wearing dark clothing in an unlighted area of the roadway, police said. Green was pronounced dead at Howard County General Hospital.

Police, who believe the accident was caused by pedestrian error, are investigating.

Head-on collision kills 1, injures 3

One person was killed and at least three others were injured when two cars collided last night on the East Northern Parkway bridge over Perring Parkway in Northeast Baltimore. The names of the dead and injured were not available.

Shortly before 8:30 p.m., the male driver of a Lincoln Continental was eastbound on the bridge when he crossed over the dividing line and crashed head-on into a westbound Mercury Sable station wagon, said Chief Kevin Cartwright, a city Fire Department spokesman. He said both cars were demolished and that at least one person was trapped before being freed by firefighters.

Cartwright said one person was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital, another to Sinai Hospital and two to Maryland Shock Trauma Center.

Fla. man arrested on heroin charges

A Florida man has been arrested and charged with importing more than 30 pounds of heroin with intent to distribute, described by Maryland State Police as the largest such seizure in their history.

Jose M. Gomez, 41, of Orlando was driving a 2003 Dodge Caravan when he was stopped Tuesday by a trooper on Interstate 95 in Cecil County on suspicion of speeding, police said. The trooper, from the Maryland State Police Proactive Criminal Enforcement Team, observed potential criminal activity in the van and called for a drug dog, police said.

The dog scanned the van and identified suspected drugs, police said. A hidden compartment found in the engine firewall contained 32 pounds of heroin wrapped in plastic, police said. The heroin is estimated to have a street value of $4.4 million.
