A VIVID 'IMAGINATION'

Barry Nemett, the chair of the painting department at Maryland Institute College of Art, has two passions, painting and writing. He discusses both and their intersecting roles in his life in a slide talk, "Fiction and Vision: Pigments of Imagination," at the Johns Hopkins University tonight. Nemett will also read from his new novel, Crooked Tracks, and hold a book signing.

NEW BLACK EXPERIENCE

Anne Arundel Community College puts a unique spin on celebrating Black History Month by hosting "The Other African-American: Nicaragua, Central America" today. The program offers a lecture, a short video, poetry and food that relates to the Afro-Nicaraguan culture. The Anne Arundel Dance Company will also perform.

DRAWING ON HISTORY

Coyaba Dance Theater, which performs traditional and contemporary West African dance and music; the award-winning Dance Place Step Team, comprised of 10- to 14-year-olds; and The Wire's Maria Broom, who will be storytelling, take part in Sunday's African-American History Month Family Day at the Baltimore Museum of Art. The event also includes a tour of black art and African-American Family Day Art Workshop: True to His Colors: Baltimore Artist Tom Miller. During this activity, children and parents can contribute images to a mural using Miller's works as inspiration.

CONTINENTAL DRIFT

Munch on a turkey sandwich or some carrot sticks while you learn about historical artistic connections between Africa and Europe at today's Lunch and Learn presentation, "The Fascination with Ethiopia in Renaissance Europe," in the Walters Art Museum's Graham Auditorium. Joaneath Spicer, curator of Renaissance and Baroque Art, will lecture on the close ties between Ethiopia and Europe, particularly Italy, during the Renaissance. The program includes discussions of Ethiopian art, food and society, images of Renaissance and baroque artwork, and a Q&A; session with Spicer.
