Genealogy Society to hold presentation

The Howard County Genealogy Society will sponsor a presentation on the latest research tools available at the Family History Center in Ellicott City at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 13 at the Ellicott City Senior Center, 9401 Frederick Road, Ellicott City.

Dottie Aleshire, an Ellicott City resident who has published three personal family histories and other books, will speak.

An informal workshop, with a "help" table, "browsing" table and "surname file" table will be held at 7 p.m. A short business meeting is scheduled at 7:30 p.m.

Admission is free and open to everyone. Reservations are not required. If Howard County public schools are closed for any reason, the meeting will be canceled.

Volunteer docents, tour guides sought

Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks is seeking volunteer docents and tour guides to staff historic sites in Ellicott City.

An orientation for prospective volunteers will be held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Feb. 19 at the Mount Ida Visitor Center at Patapsco Female Institute Historic Park.

Those who attend will hear about opportunities at the Fire House Museum, the Thomas Isaac Log Cabin, the Ellicott City Colored School, Restored and the Patapsco Female Institute Historic Park.

Trinity School to host open house

Trinity School, a private Catholic co-ed school in Ellicott City, will hold an open house at 9:30 a.m. Feb. 14.

Parents of children entering kindergarten through eighth grade are welcome to attend.

Horse Park Task Force meeting planned

The next meeting of the Horse Park Task Force will be held at noon Feb. 13 at Kiwanis-Wallas Park, 3300 Norberts Way, Ellicott City.

Teen Advisory Board to meet Tuesday

The Miller branch library, 9421 Frederick Road, Ellicott City, will hold a meeting of its Teen Advisory Board from 3:15 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. Tuesday.

The board, whose members are ages 12-17, assist the library by advising on books, music, movies and other programs for teens at the library. Refreshments are provided.

Soccer program -- Registration is open for the Elkridge Youth Organization soccer program. Regular registration ends Feb. 29; late registration ends March 31. The co-ed, recreational program emphasizes instruction, fitness and fun. Players ages 5-17 are welcome. There are no tryouts for recreational leagues. Breakfast -- The Elkridge Volunteer Fire Department, 6275 Old Washington Blvd., will sponsor an all-you-can-eat breakfast from 7:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. today. Baked goods will be available. Knitting for charity -- A community service group meets to knit and crochet blankets, baby clothes and other items for charities, hospitals and senior centers. Chess -- The Elkridge library, 6540 Washington Blvd., sponsors a chess club for ages 13 and older from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays. Players of all abilities are welcome, but they must know how to play chess. Snacks will be provided. Registration not required. 410-313-5077.

Learning English -- The Miller branch library offers an English conversation club from 7:45 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. Wednesdays for people who speak English as a second language and would like to practice conversation in a group setting. First-time participants must register in advance. 410-313-1950.
