Edgewood basketball coach is out

Lamont Pennick is out as coach of the Edgewood boys basketball team, less than two weeks after he protested an officiating call by ordering his players to stand still on the court when play resumed.

School officials began an investigation into the incident, which took place on Jan. 18 against Fallston. Game officials stopped the contest with about 90 seconds left and awarded Fallston a 68-52 win because Edgewood's players refused to play.

"I was just trying to make a statement," Pennick said. "I'm sorry that it happened this way."

There has been no confirmation as to whether Pennick resigned or was fired.

Sidney Brooks, who had been the junior varsity coach, will finish out the season as interim head coach.

John Carroll boys basketball -- John Carroll's move from the MIAA's B Conference to the A Conference has been fairly smooth. The Patriots entered the weekend with a 14-8 overall record and 7-5 conference mark. Forward-center Isaiah Philmore has been averaging 18.9 points per game, 10.3 rebounds and 2.1 assists. Wyatt Smith, Josh Wiegand and Malcolm McMillan have also helped on offense. The Patriots face St. Anthony's (N.J.), ranked No. 1 in USA Today, at Rutgers University on Friday.

Fallston girls basketball -- Fallston guard-forward Jess Harlee has missed more than three weeks after undergoing corrective laser surgery to repair an eye injury. Harlee got poked in the eye during Fallston's game with Bel Air on Jan. 15. The Cougars lost two in a row when she got hurt, but rebounded to win a few close games. As of last week, they had a 6-2 conference record and were in first place in the Chesapeake Division.
