Raymond L. Davis, a retired maintenance supervisor and longtime Hamilton resident, died of lung cancer Jan. 26 at Gilchrist Center for Hospice Care. He was 58.
Mr. Davis was born in Sparrows Point and raised in East Baltimore. After graduating from City College in 1967, he went to work at Continental Can Co.'s Biddle Street plant as a machine mechanic.
When the plant closed in the mid-1970s, he took a position as a machine mechanic at Baltimore Gas and Electric Co., where he performed routine maintenance on electricity-generating equipment until 1995.
Until retiring on a health disability last year, Mr. Davis was maintenance supervisor at Overlea Health and Rehabilitation Center on Belair Road.
"He used to say, 'This was the most rewarding job' because he enjoyed helping the residents and he liked his co-workers," said his wife of 37 years, the former Linda A. Reid. "He liked doing things for others and didn't mind when his co-workers asked for help before he got his coat off."
Mr. Davis enjoyed mentoring children, collecting stamps and fishing. He also liked working on home-improvement projects and tuning up his car.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. today in the chapel of the Vaughn Greene Funeral Home, 4905 York Road.
Also surviving are a son, Raymond T. Davis of Baltimore; three daughters, Racquel Davis, Raven Davis and Shannon Davis, all of Baltimore; two sisters, Barbara McLeod and Marcia Streat, both of Baltimore; and four granddaughters.
