Ruth L. Gruhn, a homemaker and volunteer, died of complications from dementia Thursday at Gilchrist Center for Hospice Care. She was 85.

Ruth Lillian Dimmick was born and raised in Missoula, Mont., and during World War II served with the Women's Army Corps. She was discharged with the rank of corporal in 1946.

She moved to Timonium after the war and briefly worked as a Social Security Administration stenographer.

In 1947, she married Earle A. Gruhn, a Social Security Administration analyst, who died in 1999.

She volunteered with the American Cancer Society, the American Heart Association and the American Diabetes Foundation.

An avid gardener, Mrs. Gruhn had been a member of Seventh Baptist Church in Baltimore and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, 120 W. Pennsylvania Ave., where a memorial service will be held at 12:30 p.m. Feb. 17.

Survivors include a son, William D. Gruhn of Loch Raven Village; two daughters, Marie H. Stockdale of Timonium and Louise M. MacDonald of Chesapeake, Va.; five grandchildren; and a great-grandson. Another son, Charles Gruhn, died in 1980.
