Worker found dead in Finksburg video store

Maryland State Police are investigating the death of a Carroll County man.

The body of Gary L. Hatfield, 54, of the 3300 block of Oak St. in Manchester was found late Saturday night near a counter at the back of H and D Movie Sales in the 2000 block of Suffolk Road in Finksburg, police said. Hatfield worked at the video store.

Police were called to the scene about 11 p.m. by members of Hatfield's family, who had been looking for him at the store after he didn't return home at the usual time, police said. The store closes at 10 p.m.

The cause of death had not been determined yesterday, but police said they are treating the death as a possible homicide.

Anyone with information about Hatfield's death, or anyone who was near the 2000 block of Suffolk Road between 9 p.m. and 11 p.m. Saturday, is asked to contact the Maryland State Police Westminster barracks at 410-386-3000.

Two sought in assault on bus

Maryland Transit Administration Police and city police were seeking at least two young males who assaulted a 19-year-old man aboard a No. 8 bus Saturday night as it headed south on York Road from Towson toward the city, an MTA spokeswoman said.

About 11 p.m., several youths left the movies at Towson Commons on York Road, boarded the bus and became rowdy, said Jawauna Greene, the spokeswoman. She said that as their behavior became more disturbing, at least two of them assaulted the passenger for no apparent reason.

She said the driver activated the vehicle's emergency alarm, alerting MTA and city police.

Greene said that when the bus stopped at York Road and East Northern Parkway, the youths left moments before MTA and city police arrived.

The passenger was not seriously injured, she said. Police were reviewing surveillance tape from a bus camera to identify his attackers, Greene said.

Saturday night's assault was at least the fourth such incident on an MTA bus since Dec. 4, when a female passenger was beaten in Hampden.
