A Towson couple charged last month with child abuse in the death of their toddler son were indicted this week on felony charges.
A Baltimore County prosecutor said the grand jury case has remained open while investigators await the results of an autopsy on 2-year-old Andrew Patrick Griffin. That report could prompt the filing of additional, more serious charges, said prosecutor S. Ann Brobst.
John J. Griffin and Susan Griffin of Rodgers Forge were each indicted Tuesday on two counts of first-degree child abuse and two counts of second-degree child abuse.
Brobst said she was unsure how long the autopsy tests will take.
The Griffins brought their son to St. Joseph Medical Center in Towson on Dec. 26. The boy was "cold to the touch and unresponsive," and he was soon pronounced dead, according to court documents.
At the time of his death, the toddler weighed about 13 pounds -- roughly the weight of a typical 3-month-old.
Both parents are being held at the Baltimore County Detention Center while awaiting trial.
