Cell-phone bill vote is put off

The Baltimore Sun

A committee vote scheduled for yesterday on a ban on hand-held cell phone use while driving has been postponed so that supporters can continue to lobby for it.

"We're still trying to scramble for one more vote," said Sen. Mike Lenett, a Montgomery County Democrat sponsoring the legislation.

Lenett's bill would allow drivers to use wireless communication devices only with hands-free accessories, such as headphone sets equipped with microphones.

In a hearing on the bill this week, senators in the nine-member Judicial Proceedings Committee appeared split on the issue.
