A 23-year-old man pleaded guilty in city Circuit Court yesterday to killing a fellow detainee in a cell they shared at the Baltimore City Detention Center in June 2005, according to the state's attorney's office.
Lonnie Edwards of the 100 block of Haven St. was sentenced to eight years in prison for second-degree murder and an additional eight years for possessing drugs, prosecutors said.
Edwards admitted to fatally beating Lennard Benjamin, 23, who was being held on bail on an attempted murder charge. Correctional officers found Edwards standing over Benjamin, who was unconscious on the floor suffering from head trauma, prosecutors said. He died two days later at Johns Hopkins Hospital.
Authorities said in charging documents that Edwards, who was being held on drug charges, admitted "being engaged in a physical confrontation" with the victim.
