An All-Metro receiver in football, Brandon Johnson-Farrell also is one of the key players on Arundel's surging basketball team. Johnson-Farrell was one of the leaders on Arundel's Class 4A state runner-up in football and now is one of the leaders on the basketball team that is ranked No. 13 and is 10-2 after going 13-11 last year.
His speed, quickness and instincts are as noticeable on the court as they were on the football field. Johnson-Farrell does a lot of things for the basketball team, as he did last week in the Wildcats' 89-74 win at No. 14 Old Mill. He had six points, 11 rebounds and five assists.
Johnson-Farrell "is a leader by example and hard work," Arundel basketball coach Jeff Star said. He hopes to play football in college.
Despite setting state single-season records for receptions (103), yards (1,394) and touchdown catches (23), not to mention state career records for catches (174) and touchdown receptions (40), he has not settled on a college.
Johnson-Farrell has decided to run as a sprinter on the track team this spring.
It is late January, and you don't know where you are going to college. How disappointing is that after the season you had?
After the season, I expected it to pick up. It's been surprising and disappointing. It's just a lot of waiting.
What schools have contacted you?
Delaware State, the University of Delaware, Rhode Island, Salisbury. Towson has, but they offered a walk-on position, and so have a couple other schools. Bowie State has an offer on the table.
Do you think is it your size (5 feet 9, 185 pounds) that is the reason more schools haven't made offers?
Yes, I think it's the biggest knock against me, either my size or I'm not the protoypical receiver they're looking for in somebody 6-4 or 6-5. It's a little disappointing.
How do you compensate for your lack of height in both sports you play?
Throughout my whole sports career, I've worked hard. I know working hard will help make up for size or disadvantages or some of the things I lack.
How are your grades?
Ever since I started high school, my dad has always been on me about my grades, telling me that I wouldn't be able to go anywhere without good grades. So, I've made sure I've always kept up with them and had good study habits.
What is your GPA and SAT score?
I've got a 3.0 grade point average and got an SAT score of 1,540.
What was it like playing in M&T; Bank Stadium when you lost the 4A final to Quince Orchard?
The stage, the stadium and the atmosphere was just amazing.
How's the basketball team?
We're a close-knit team with a lot of good friends on the team. We have good chemistry.
When you settle on college, what are your plans?
I want to focus on football. Basketball is fun, but football is my first love. It's my favorite thing to do. I want to dedicate all my time to it. And I'm interested in business management. I want to run my own business, something related to sports, like a fitness club or gym.
Who are your favorite teams?
Why the Lakers and Eagles?
I'm a Kobe Bryant fan ever since I started watching. The Eagles were the first team I started watching, and I really liked Ricky Watters when he was playing for them. My dad tried to force me to be a Redskins fan, but I ended up liking the Eagles.
Never considered the Ravens?
