String quartet to perform two free concerts Friday

As part of the Candlelight Concert Series' outreach program, two free concerts by the Enso String Quartet will be offered at two Howard County senior centers Friday.

A performance at the Glenwood Senior Center begins at 10:30 a.m, a performance at the Bain Center at 1 p.m.

Program on teen financial literacy

"Sound Cents," a program on teen financial literacy, will be offered from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Glenwood branch library, 2350 Route 97, Cooksville.

The program, designed for youth ages 15-17, covers the importance of saving, budgeting and using credit wisely. A representative from the Federal Reserve Bank will explain how to make a financial plan for buying a car, paying for a trip or preparing for school expenses.

Graduates -- Air Force Airman Jamel L. Murray, grandson of Yvonne Mohammed of Glenwood and son of Paulette Cudjoe of Brooklyn, N.Y., has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio. He is a 2006 graduate of Glenelg High School.

Travel funds -- Mark and Patty Carroll, who own Town and Country Auto Repair in Dayton and are alumni of Glenelg High School, are offering Good Neighbor Savings Cards that include discount coupons for two oil changes and other services. The cards are being sold for $20 by Glenelg students. The proceeds will help the school's marching unit and drill team to attend out-of-state competitions.

Fitness -- The Glenwood Community Center is offering a "New Year's Resolution" fitness promotion through Friday: Admission passes for 25, 50 or 100 visits. The passes have no expiration date and there are no additional monthly fees. A medical clearance form and orientation is required before exercising. The center's new game room is available for those ages 12 and older from 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. A Glenwood Community Center identification card, which costs $5, is required. Glenelg jazz -- The Glenelg High School Jazz Ensemble will perform at 7 p.m. Friday at the Glenwood Community Center, 2400 Route 97, Cooksville. The ensemble has received more than 60 awards over the past past 10 years, including the highest rating at the Maryland State Jazz Festival, and has performed with guests such as Maynard Ferguson, the Count Basie Orchestra, Carl Fischer, Chris Vadala, Deanna Bogart and others. Road work -- The State Highway Administration is working to relieve congestion and improve safety along Route 32 at Burntwoods Road by constructing a $30 million interchange. The interchange will remove two traffic signals at Burntwoods and Ten Oaks roads and relocate private driveways and local roads that intersect Route 32. The Route 32/Burntwoods Road intersection will be relocated, and a roundabout, ramps, a bridge and an access point will be added. Lane closings are planned along Route 32 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday through Friday. Lanes might be closed along Ten Oaks, Pfefferkorn and Burntwoods roads from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Traffic signs and cones will guide motorists through work zones.
