Archbishop Spalding forward Jordan Clinton "is having a breakout season," Cavaliers coach Deb Taylor said.
Clinton's success on the basketball court is not surprising considering that her father, Tim Clinton, played at Glen Burnie and that her mother, Debbie Garrison Clinton, played for Brooklyn Park, where she scored 1,630 career points and was a member of state championship teams in 1985, 1986 and 1987. Jordan's younger brother, Trey Clinton, is on the Mount St. Joseph junior varsity team.
"It's definitely in my blood and family," Jordan Clinton said. "My mom, dad and brother have all helped me with my game."
Clinton, who wants to play in college, has averaged double figures in scoring and has a 3.3 grade point average.
Knowing your mom's background in basketball, did you feel any pressure when you started playing?
No, not really. My mom likes basketball and has taught me how much fun it can be. She's taught me a lot.
How many years have you started at Spalding?
I started last season, but hurt my knee, was out a few weeks, came back and earned my starting position back.
You started playing at 3. When did you get serious about basketball?
I played [Amateur Athletic Union] ball for the Sure Shots, D.C Heat and the last couple years with the Maryland Stars. I started getting serious with the Stars. ... We went to the AAU nationals in Florida last summer and made it to the final eight. And this year in high school, I got really interested and definitely want to go to college and play basketball.
What do you think you do best in basketball, and what do you have to work on to succeed at the next level?
I'd have to say scoring and post defense are two things I do well, but I need to improve my speed and agility and my jump shot. Coach Deb is getting me to shoot more this year. My mom and dad have helped me with my skills.
After going 15-12 a year ago and being eliminated in the IAAM quarterfinals, has this year's Spalding team surprised you with its 12-4 start?
Definitely surprised me, because we have four freshmen on the team, but they are really good, and this team has meshed together. I think we can go very far in the playoffs. Our offense is very good, and we have to keep working on our defense.
What other interests do you have?
I like to hang out with my friends, go to the movies and I like music. I like R&B; and rap, like the beats. My favorite movie is She's the Man. It's about a girl who dresses like a guy and goes out for the soccer team to prove a point.
Are most of your friends involved in sports?
Just about all of them. I love playing and talking sports.
Do you have a favorite team?
I like watching women's college basketball on TV, and my favorite team is North Carolina.
What will be your major in college?
I like forensic science, like the crime-solving and science of it.
