Upset over Old Mill buoys Severn girls

The Baltimore Sun

The Severn girls basketball team got what coach Chuck Miller called an "enormous" win, upsetting then-No. 9 Old Mill, 48-44, last Wednesday at Severn.

The Admirals (12-3, 6-0 in the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland B Conference) went 15-for-19 from the line, including four straight by junior Leanne Hug in the final minute to seal the win.

"As a result, the kids think they can play with anybody now," said Miller, a retired FBI agent who is in his eighth season.

Miller coached the St. Mary's junior varsity for nine years, taking the Saints to the league championship game every year before taking the Severn job.

"What I've tried to do at Severn is build a successful program and play the county public schools," said Miller, whose team lost to No. 12 South River by two points early in the season. "I think we are every bit as good as most county public school teams."

Severn is led by 5-foot-11 senior Taylor Wieczorek, who is averaging 12 points and 11 rebounds, junior Katie Dickerson (11.7 points per game) and sophomore point guard Aura Payne (four assists per game).

Sophomore guard Leah Cranmer, who had a game-high 18 points against Old Mill, also has contributed to the Admirals' fast start.

Glen Burnie boys basketball -- Glen Burnie might have taken on too much by scheduling undefeated Old Mill and 11-time state champion Dunbar on consecutive days last weekend. Coach Mike Rudd's Gophers lost 69-61 at home Friday to Old Mill and the next night lost at Morgan State to the Poets, 46-37, in the 12th annual Basketball Academy.

Quick hits -- The Southern boys basketball team's scored its biggest win of the season Friday, a 65-64 upset of then-No. 14 Arundel in Harwood. Nico Wallace led the Bulldogs (4-6) with 10 points and nine rebounds. ... In swimming, Broadneck's Eric Robichaud won four events Friday to lead the Bruins boys to a tri-meet victory at the North Arundel Aquatics Center over Old Mill, 60-34, and North County, 83-11. The Bruins girls swept the same schools, winning 75-19 over Old Mill and 78-15 over North County. Colin Heil and Sarah Lloyd led the way. ... Severna Park coach Paul Joyce got four pins from his team as his Falcons (4-4) upset neighborhood rival Broadneck (9-5), 40-29, in wrestling Friday. Marcus Monroe (140 pounds), Zach Shreve (152), Pat Downey (189) and heavyweight Jared Planz all pinned their opponents.
