Recovering from tragedy
Army women's basketball (2006-07): After Black Knights coach Maggie Dixon died in April 2006 at age 28 from heart arrhythmia, former Division I men's coach Dave Magarity, who had been Dixon's top assistant, was promoted. The team went 24-6. Indiana football (2007): After the death of Terry Hoeppner after a long bout with cancer, the Hoosiers promoted assistant coach Bill Lynch. The Hoosiers finished the regular season 7-5 before losing in their first bowl appearance since 1993. Northwestern football (2006): Randy Walker's death from a heart attack before the start of the season resulted in Pat Fitzgerald's being promoted from Walker's staff to head coach. The Wildcats finished 4-8 that season and 6-6 in 2007.
