Allen Julius Poole Jr., a retired telephone company employee and sports enthusiast, died of congestive heart failure Dec. 30 at Upper Chesapeake Medical Center. The Joppa resident was 74.

Born in Baltimore and raised on Kingsley Street, he attended St. Benedict's Parochial School and sang in the adjoining church choir. Mr. Poole played soccer at Polytechnic Institute. During the second half of his senior year, he joined the Navy and served aboard the USS Bassett, a destroyer escort in the North Atlantic. He earned his General Educational Development diploma while in the military.

He joined the old Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Co. in 1955 as a lineman and retired 42 years later from what had become AT&T.;

Mr. Poole was a baseball and football enthusiast. He also coached soccer for St. Stephen's School in Bradshaw.

A memorial Mass will be offered at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Stephen Roman Catholic Church, 8030 Bradshaw Road in Bradshaw, where he was a member.

Survivors include his wife of 36 years, the former Sharon Martin; four sons, Allen Poole of Bel Air, Michael Poole of Dundalk, Timothy Poole of Baltimore and Stephen Poole of Joppa; a daughter, Colleen James of Joppa; and six grandchildren.
