Glen Burnie's boys basketball team is returning to the Basketball Academy mixer at Morgan State University this weekend. The Gophers of coach Mike Rudd will play at 6 p.m. Saturday against Dunbar of Baltimore.
"We look forward to playing the Baltimore teams," said Rudd, whose team started the week at 6-2 and will host neighborhood rival Old Mill Friday night.
"We've been playing well and getting contributions from our bench as we get into the tough part of our schedule."
Tickets will be $10 at the door, but they can be bought at Glen Burnie High for $5. Call Rudd at the school, 410-761-8950, ext. 285, to purchase tickets.
Rudd and his Gophers are also holding their annual Alumni Game at 6 p.m. Jan. 26 at the school.
Southern girls basketball -- Heather Schneck, who scored her 1,000th career point during a 64-55 win over Severna Park on Friday night, has much more in common with twin sister Kim than just that milestone. They also have identical 4.4 grade-point averages and similar SAT scores - Heather scored 1,740, while Kim got 1,720. Heather is ranked seventh in her class, while Kim is ninth. They both plan to attend the University of Maryland and major in math and accounting. They also played four years of varsity soccer together at Southern. "We are very close and best friends," Heather said. "We talk about everything and give each other advice."
Quick hits -- David Ford had 26 points, 13 rebounds and three blocked shots for North County (4-5) in the Knights' 57-36 rout of Chesapeake (3-5) on Friday. ... J.J. Hicks continues to lead the Broadneck boys basketball team in scoring with 17 points a game. Kevin Hunt (14.6 points) is the leader in rebounds (11.8) and assists (3.7).
