Feel the burn? You are closer to the sun today than you will be all year - a mere 91,444,000 miles away, give or take. Scientists call it "perihelion." It occurred about 7 o'clock last night EST, while Sol was out of sight. The timing can vary by a few days, between late-afternoon Jan. 1 and early evening on the 4th, our time. Earth's lopsided orbit carries us farthest from our sun - 94,558,000 miles - on July 4 this year. That's called "aphelion."
