Vandals hit homes, cars on nine streets

Howard County police said yesterday that they were searching for a man who was seen near one of 16 vehicles and several homes that were vandalized on nine Clarksville streets before dawn Friday. They said the man wore a dark jacket with yellow sleeves.

Police said a vandal flattened tires on six cars and spray-painted 10 vehicles, houses and driveways on streets near White Pebble Path, where the first report originated about 3:45 a.m. Several of the spray-painted remarks are classified as hate-bias in nature, officials said.

Police ask anyone with information to call 410-313-3700. A $500 reward is being offered.

Disturbance, fire at juvenile center

Baltimore firefighters and police responded early yesterday evening to the Juvenile Detention Center in the 300 block of N. Gay St. to quell a disturbance among several teenage residents and to extinguish a fire set by some of the youths.

No injuries were reported.

City officers were summoned, but the disturbance was under control before they arrived, police said.

Agent Donny Moses, a police spokesman, said an altercation broke out between a resident and a staff officer about 5:40 p.m. and that several other youths became involved.

During the disturbance, a fire was set in a first-floor room, and a sprinkler system was activated and extinguished the blaze, a Fire Department official said. Damage was confined to the room, the official said.
