A man was killed yesterday morning in downtown Baltimore after he jumped in front of a subway train at the Lexington Market Metro station, officials said.

When Baltimore City Fire Department authorities reached the station just after 8 a.m., they found the man, who appeared to be 35 to 40 years old, trapped underneath a train. He had been run over by one car and he was rescued under a second car, said Chief Kevin Cartwright, a Fire Department spokesman.

He was taken to Maryland Shock Trauma Center and died shortly after reaching the hospital, said Jawauna Greene, a spokeswoman for the Maryland Transit Administration. She said witnesses reported he had jumped.

Authorities said they were still working to identify the man. The station was temporarily shut down.

The incident comes two weeks after a woman attempted suicide at the Lexington Market station, Greene said.

The woman jumped in front of a train and landed on the concrete in which the rails are mounted, surviving with minor cuts, Cartwright said. Greene said the attempts were the first this year on the subway.

"This is the holiday season, and as with national trends, we see a spike in suicides around this time," Greene said. "It's very tragic. Our hearts go out to his family."
