The aroma is intoxicating in this first store the Baltimore Coffee & Tea Co. has opened outside of its Timonium factory and shop.

The store sells more than 105 kinds of coffee and coffee drinks, and hundreds of teas -- plus sandwiches, salads and snacks. Shelves are packed with accessories and gifts, including oversized seasonal Burton and Burton mugs ($19) and Stonewall Kitchen's sugar plum jam ($8.25).

"What makes us different is we are a local roaster," said Annapolis store manager Kathryn Huston. "Everything is fresh, within a few days." Beans are roasted to order daily in small batches at the Timonium factory and delivered to the Annapolis store as needed, sometimes still warm. The outfit bought the Eastern Shore Tea Co. several years ago, and sells the teas in ribbon-tied pouches, with prices depending on the flavor (Nantucket mint is $4.95 a package).
