Man who fought police Dec. 7 dies at hospital

The Baltimore Sun

A Howard County man arrested this month after fighting with Maryland state troopers at a Westminster house has died at a hospital, authorities said.

Anthony M. Casarella, 34, of Glenelg was pronounced dead at 5:30 a.m. Thursday at Frederick Memorial Hospital, state police said.

A cause of death has not been determined.

State troopers encountered Casarella on Dec. 7 at the house on Plain View Drive in Mount Airy after occupants called to report a disorderly man at their front door.

Police said Casarella had asked the occupants, whom he did not know, if he could use their telephone because his truck had broken down. He called police and his mother, police said.

Troopers and the man's parents arrived at the home and found Casarella outside wearing a tank top and pants.

Police said he pushed his mother and threw his brother to the ground and struggled with troopers who tried to arrest him.

"According to troopers, Casarella was acting violent and uncontrollable and was possibly under the influence of a drug," state police said in a statement. Police said that once subdued, he kicked the windows of a police car.

While at the Frederick County Detention Center, police said, Casarella had trouble breathing and was taken to the hospital, where he remained until he died.
