Uplands lawsuit settlement due
Baltimore is expected to settle a long-standing lawsuit with former residents of Uplands Apartments, a move that will help clear the way for a proposed redevelopment of the site that city officials hope will begin next year.
Under the terms of an agreement before the Board of Estimates today, 285 housing units will be made available to former residents of Uplands who were displaced after the federal government foreclosed on the complex in 2003 and relocated its residents.
A settlement has been expected in the case for years, and Mayor Sheila Dixon's administration chose a team this summer to redevelop the site, along Old Frederick Road in Southwest Baltimore. The redevelopment is expected to begin next year and will one of the city's largest such projects.

Forum today to focus on homelessness
A forum on homelessness and affordable housing will be held from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. today at Pleasant View Gardens Community Center, 201 N. Aisquith St.
Sheilah Kast of WYPR Radio will be moderator for the forum, which is free and open to the public. Members of the panel will include Paul T. Graziano, Baltimore's housing commissioner, and Joan Jacobson, author of a recent Abell Foundation report on public housing.
The forum is the last in a series of four leading up to National Homeless Persons' Memorial Day, which is observed Dec. 21.
Westport
Work could cause Russell St. delays
Baltimore transportation officials are warning motorists of delays this week along Russell Street between Bush Street and the Westport exit ramp because of milling and paving south of the Russell Street Viaduct. The work is planned for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. today through Friday. Transportation officials say they expect to keep at least one lane of traffic open.

Medical group plans to meet in city
A group of medical meeting planners will hold its convention in Baltimore for the next two years, bringing 1,000 pharmaceutical professionals to the city each year, the city's convention association said yesterday.
The Center for Business Intelligence and Medical Meetings magazine will hold their annual meeting at the Baltimore Convention Center in March 2008 and March 2009. Previously, the group had met in Philadelphia.
