Five students were taken to a hospital as a precaution yesterday morning after a Harford County school bus rear-ended another one in Edgewood. The crash was one of two school bus accidents in the state yesterday.

The five Edgewood Middle School students were treated at Upper Chesapeake Medical Center in Bel Air and released, said Don Morrison, a spokesman for Harford County public schools.

The crash occurred about 7:30 a.m. after the two buses stopped for a traffic light on Edgewood Road at Route 24, said Sgt. Christina Presberry, a Harford County sheriff's spokeswoman. When the light turned green, one bus, which was on its way to pick up Edgewood Elementary School students, rear-ended the other bus, which was carrying 29 students to Edgewood Middle School.

There were no apparent signs of injuries, and the five students were taken to the hospital as a precaution, Presberry said. Both buses had minor damage and were driven from the scene.

No one has been charged in the accident, Presberry said.

The school system's transportation office will review the accident, Morrison said.

On the Eastern Shore, two Queen Anne's County schoolchildren were injured yesterday evening when the school bus they were riding home struck a deer in Crumpton, according to state police at the Centerville barracks.

Shortly before 6 p.m., Barbara Wallace, 49, was driving a privately owned school bus west on Route 544 near Fourth Street when the vehicle struck a deer and came to a sudden stop, causing minor injuries to two of the eight children on the bus.

Trooper 1st Class Trapper Bilbrough said the students complained of neck and back pain, and were taken by ambulance to Chester River Hospital in Chestertown.

Bilbrough said the deer bounded away. He was unable to say whether it survived.
