GIRLS SOCCER

PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Gigi Mangione

McDonogh

Mangione was the catalyst for a McDonogh team that reached the Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference final. The junior, who played midfielder and forward for the Eagles, scored 13 goals and had nine assists. She netted an overtime game-winner against St. Vincent Pallotti in the teams' first meeting and registered two goals and an assist in a come-from-behind victory over Notre Dame Prep this season. The versatile Mangione was a Maryland Association of Coaches of Soccer first-team selection and led McDonogh to a 16-5-2 record and a No. 3 final ranking.

PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Chris Agorsor

McDonogh

The senior, who has attended McDonogh for three years but is graduating early to continue his soccer career, missed 3 1/2 weeks because of a hip flexor but still recorded 24 goals and eight assists, leading No. 1 McDonogh to the MIAA A Conference championship. The multi-talented forward, who is a focal point on the American Under-20 national team, has a full scholarship offer from Virginia and contract offers from professional soccer clubs. Agorsor is a Maryland Association of Coaches of Soccer first-team selection, the Maryland State Player of the Year for the second year in a row and a National Soccer Coaches Association of America Adidas All-American.

VOLLEYBALL

PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Bailey Webster

St. Paul's

Webster was a household name among area volleyball fans before the season started, but the junior took her game to another level this year. One of the most highly recruited volleyball players in the nation, she led the Gators to a 22-1 record, the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference championship, the private schools title and the No. 2 ranking. She was named the Gatorade Maryland Player of the Year. Her most complete match of the year might have been the private schools final against Washington's Good Counsel, when she had 34 kills, three blocks and 11 digs in a 3-0 sweep.

COACH OF THE YEAR

Jayne Lacy

Towson

Not satisfied to play only her assigned schedule, Lacy looked for high-quality opponents that she knew would improve her team and get it ready for the playoffs. The strategy paid off. The ninth-ranked Generals went 14-5 this season, losing to No. 1 Reservoir, No. 2 St. Paul's, No. 5 Dulaney (twice) and No. 7 River Hill. In scrimmages and tournaments, the Generals played nine of the area's top 15 programs. The tough schedule helped Towson advance to the Class 3A state semifinals, where it lost to Reservoir in three games. Lacy graduated from Towson in 1978 before playing for Western Maryland (now McDaniel College). Her alma mater asked her to return as coach 13 seasons ago. She led Towson to a state championship in 2000.

Coach of the Year

Tom Klein

Notre Dame Prep

He truly emphasized the team concept, which helped Notre Dame Prep win the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference title. Klein wanted NDP to stick with "pack-style" running, and it paid off, especially in the championship race against John Carroll when the Blazers had the eighth-, 10th-, 13th-, 15th- and 16th-place finishers.

He then took third in the Bobcat Invitational before capturing the Baltimore County title. After that, Kuppalli won the Class 4A North regional race. One week later, Kuppalli finished fifth in the state meet.

FIELD HOCKEY

PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Liza Blue

Garrison Forest

On a Grizzlies team that was solid from end to end, the sophomore midfielder played a pivotal role in helping it to the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference championship. Blue showed exceptional poise and field presence for an underclassman. Transition was her game, and she combined strong defensive instincts with a precision passing game that sparked the Grizzlies' offense.

Coach of the Year

Traci Davis

Garrison Forest

The Grizzlies had come close but until this year had not won a championship since 1995. With a young team powered largely by a host of talented sophomores, Davis turned what could have been a rebuilding season into a championship season.

Football

OFFENSIVE PLAYER

Lonnie Liggins

Hereford

Hereford uses a lot of runners in its offense, but Liggins is the main reason everyone could find so many holes. The 5-foot-9, 185-pound senior running back was the featured back in the Bulls' wing T scheme, getting 1,321 yards and 26 total touchdowns. Defenses focused mainly on the speedy back, which benefited the team's other runners. Liggins' effectiveness showed on defense, , too, as he had three interceptions and brought one back for a touchdown as a defensive back. His play sparked the Bulls to a 13-1 record and got them all the way to the Class 3A state championship game. He hasn't decided which college he'll attend, but he is considering Army, Duke, Virginia, Syracuse and Navy.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER

Bubba Harris

Loyola

Loyola earned a share of the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference title behind the tenacity of Harris, who consistently helped shut down opposing offenses. The 6-foot-1, 235-pound senior linebacker had 115 tackles (12 tackles for loss), 4.5 sacks, three pass breakups and four forced fumbles. He was a three-year starter and has won two conference titles. This season, he led the Dons to a 9-1 record and a No. 3 final ranking. North Carolina State, Akron, Cincinnati and East Carolina are among the schools interested in Harris.

COACH OF THE YEAR

Marc Mesaros

Eastern Tech

Mesaros has been at Eastern Tech for five seasons, getting to the postseason every time. This year, he led a senior-laden group to a 13-1 record and the 2A title game for the first time since 1998. Mesaros got the most out of his team, using a stable of running backs in Derryck Davis, Darian Conners and Thomas Edwards, while quarterback Travis Crane was equally potent running and passing. The Mavericks' calling card was their defense, which gave up just 59 total points before the championship game and recorded five shutouts. Mesaros has a 49-12 record with the Mavericks and has had three 10-win seasons since 2003. His team gave No. 1 River Hill its toughest test of the season, falling in the title game, 14-7.
