Bealefeld gets a raise as police commissioner; salary is set at $190,000

The Baltimore Sun

Baltimore Police Commissioner Frederick H. Bealefeld III will receive a $190,000 annual base salary under a contract approved yesterday by the city's Board of Estimates.

Bealefeld was nominated by Mayor Sheila Dixon for the job in October and was confirmed a month later by the City Council. He had served as acting commissioner since July, when the administration asked the former commissioner, Leonard D. Hamm, to resign.

The salary represents a raise not only for Bealefeld - who said in October he received $120,000 in his former job, deputy commissioner of operations - but also an increase for the position of police commissioner. Hamm made $162,000 a year.

By comparison, Dixon will receive $148,000 in salary next year. Baltimore State's Attorney Patricia C. Jessamy is paid $225,000.

In addition to the salary, Bealefeld will also be entitled to a $225,000 lump sum payout if the city ends his contract before June 30, 2010.
