Dr. Thomas Burke, professor in the Department of Health Policy and Management at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, was awarded the inaugural 2007 Faculty Award for Excellence in Academic Public Health Practice from the Association of Schools of Public Health and Pfizer Inc.'s Public Health and Government Group. The $10,000 award recognizes graduate public health faculty for their teaching and practice excellence.

Dr. Robert A. Barish has been selected as the University of Maryland, Baltimore's Public Servant of the Year. Barish is vice dean for clinical affairs at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and a professor of medicine. He was selected for his role as commander of a team of all-volunteer health care providers who assisted Hurricane Katrina survivors.

Dr. John Schumacher, associate director of the Erickson School's Center for Aging Studies at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, received a $1.2 million grant from the National Institute of Aging to investigate the relationships between health providers and residents of assisted-living facilities. Schumacher is the lead investigator of the study.

Marty Ryan has been named clinical director of the general operating room at Greater Baltimore Medical Center.

Larry Strassner, vice president of patient care and chief nursing officer at Franklin Square Hospital Center, has been appointed president-elect of the Maryland Organization of Nurse Executives. He will serve as president-elect for a one-year term beginning Jan. 1 and assume the role of president for a one-year term beginning Jan. 1, 2009.

Dr. Carole Drexel has been appointed medical science liaison at Rockpointe, a Columbia medical communications company.

Aric Spitulnik has been promoted to vice president of operations of post-acute services at Levindale Hebrew Geriatric Center and Hospital. His expanded role is in addition to his current position as Levindale administrator.
