Ever wondered how George Washington spent his evenings at home in Mount Vernon, Va., perhaps reading by candlelight with Martha at his side? Imagine no more. Instead, see for yourself at Mount Vernon by Candlelight, a holiday program that is the only time the mansion is open exclusively for evening tours by the public. The tour includes insight into the Washingtons' holiday traditions and a rare glimpse of the third floor. Visitors can meet "Martha Washington," but a sit-down with the nation's first president is unlikely. Entertainment includes caroling, cookies and hot cider.
The weekend tours take place 5 p.m.-8 p.m. today, Friday, Saturday, Dec. 2 and 7-9. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for children 11 and younger. Tickets for the event, which usually sells out, must be purchased in advance at Mount Vernon or through Ticketmaster at 703-573-7328 or ticketmaster.com.
