L.A. 'Christmas' reunion: invitation to high drama

The Baltimore Sun

In This Christmas, a middle-class home in Los Angeles' African-American neighborhood known as Victoria Park becomes a funhouse for adults. It's a place where grown-up children suddenly see who they were and who they are. That dual recognition springboards them to hope and change.

This Christmas is the rare movie about a cozy household at holiday time that's as funny and dramatic and poignant as any seasonal family get-together should be. The writer-director, Preston A. Whitmore II, has a knack for grasping common reunion situations and heightening them just enough to enable everyone, including the people within the movie, to see how needlessly sad or silly they are.

This Christmas (Screen Gems) Starring Delroy Lindo, Idris Elba, Loretta Devine, Chris Brown, Keith Robinson, Sharon Leal, Mekhi Phifer, Regina King. Directed by Preston A. Whitmore II. Rated PG-13. Time 120 minutes.
