Middle River man charged with assaulting two girls

A 30-year-old Middle River man has been arrested and charged with child abuse and related sex offenses after being accused of sexually assaulting two girls he knew, Baltimore County police said yesterday.

David Christopher Cross of the 100 block of Daycoach Circle is accused of abusing a 9-year-old girl in the summer and abusing her sister for four years beginning in 1998 when she was 6 years old, court records show.

Cross, who is being held without bail at the county detention center, came under the scrutiny of investigators last month after a man he was chatting with on the Internet called police, saying their exchange had turned sexual and that he feared for the safety of children, court records show.

Police searched Cross' mobile home this month and interviewed three children believed to have had contact with Cross, according to the charging documents.

A 15-year-old girl told investigators that Cross had sexually assaulted her repeatedly from when she was 6 years old until she was about 10, and had threatened to kill her grandmother if she told anyone, according to the court papers.

That girl's 9-year-old sister told police that Cross had sexually assaulted her during a day trip to a beach in eastern Baltimore County this summer, according to the charging documents.

The Sun does not identify the victims of alleged sexual abuse.

Cross was arrested Thursday and charged with two counts of child abuse and two counts of a third-degree sex offense.

Baltimore County police asked anyone with information about the case to call the department's Crimes Against Children Unit at 410-853-3650.
