We wrote Thursday about a big Chesapeake freeze in 1905. Shawn Costello Whooley remembers another in the 1970s. "It was cold enough, long enough for a bunch of us little girls and our moms to skate down the Magothy River to the Bay," she recalls. People drove onto the ice for tailgate parties. "I'm gonna guess '73 or '74." Nope. Not cold enough. More likely January 1977, at 10 degrees below average the coldest January on record here. They skated on the Potomac, too.
