Marcella R. Ard

Marcella R. Ard, a homemaker and former longtime Hagerstown resident, died Tuesday in her sleep at the Homewood Retirement Center in Williamsport, Pa., where she had lived since 2002. She was 92.

Marcella Rose Thompson was born and raised in Uniontown, Pa. She was married in 1935 to Fred A. Kail Sr., an estimator for the old Fairchild Aircraft Inc. and later the Pangborn Corp., both in Hagerstown. He died in 1970.

A resident of Hagerstown since 1943, Mrs. Ard was an accomplished seamstress.

"She enjoyed sewing clothes for her family and friends," said her son, Fred A. Kail Jr., a Lutherville sculptor.

Mrs. Ard was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Hagerstown and its seniors group.

In 1986, she married the Rev. Wilson P. Ard, pastor of her church. He died several years ago.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. tomorrow at the Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown.

Also surviving are a daughter, Eileen Harbaugh of Hagerstown; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
