The No. 11 Eastern Tech and No. 14 Loch Raven girls soccer teams have become accustomed to seeing each other.
The teams played once in the regular season, a 1-1 tie. They saw each other in the Baltimore County championship, with Eastern Tech winning, 3-1.
Last night, they played for the Class 2A North regional title and a birth into the state semifinals. Eastern Tech (13-2-1) controlled the midfield and won, 1-0.
"This year, it was our goal to get [the regional] title back and to get into the state tournament," Mavericks coach Kim Williams said. "Tonight's game was definitely the toughest. [Loch Raven] really played hard, but luckily, we persevered."
With 12 minutes left in the first half, Eastern Tech's Sarah Holmes fielded a pass from Samantha Pinder 3 yards from the net and scored.
"It's the greatest feeling in the world," Holmes said. "It's just amazing."
Loch Raven (10-6-2) didn't convert on two key opportunities in the second half, one in front of the net and another on a corner kick.
Eastern Tech's next opponent will be the winner of the Parkside/Kent Island game in the 2A East regional final.
Sparrows Point 5, Carver A&T; 1 -- Melissa Wampler had two goals for Sparrows Point in the victory over Carver A&T; (14-1-2) in the 1A North regional final.
No. 6 River Hill 3, Mount Hebron 2 -- Semret Seyoum scored the winning goal for the Hawks(16-1-1) in a victory over the Vikings in the 2A North regional final. The first half was a scoring frenzy, with River Hill scoring two goals in the opening 15 minutes and Mount Hebron responding with two goals of its own before intermission.
No. 9 Wilde Lake 1, No. 1 Fallston 0 -- Kristina Jackson scored the lone goal for the Wildecats in their victory over the Cougars in the 3A East regional final. The goal came with 7:25 left to go in the second half, and Fallston couldn't respond.
Boys
No. 9 Perry Hall 3, C. Milton Wright 0 -- Josh Spivey scored two goals to lead the Gators (13-1-3) to the 4A North regional championship over the Mustangs (12-3-1).
No. 3 Severna Park 2, Leonardtown -- Sean Bunoski had a goal and an assist to lead the Falcons (15-3) past Red Raiders (13-3).
No. 8 Liberty 5, Clarksburg 2 -- Matt Gillan scored a goal and recorded an assist as the Lions (14-1-2) defeated the Coyotes (10-4-3) in the 2A West final.stefen.lovelace@baltsun.com
