613 drivers cited over disabled parking
County police have written more than 600 citations against drivers since increasing enforcement - and the fine - for those who park illegally in spots for the handicapped, County Executive John R. Leopold announced yesterday.
Since the county increased its fine from $100 to $500 and beefed up enforcement in June, the county reported 613 citations.
From Jan. 1 to June 4, by comparison, the county issued 246 citations for illegal parking in spaces for the disabled. In 2006, 176 disabled-parking citations were issued.
"I am pleased to see that this initiative to crack down on disabled-parking violators has produced impressive results in the first four months," Leopold said. "The administration's message that disabled-parking abuse will not be tolerated has apparently been heard loudly and clearly by county residents."
