College center session for prospective students

Laurel College Center, a partnership between Howard and Prince George's community colleges, will offer a free information session for prospective students at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Those who attend will learn about credit and noncredit courses, weekend classes and options for associate's and bachelor's degrees.

The center is at 312 Marshall Ave., Suite 205, Laurel, adjacent to the Laurel Shopping Center.

Lunch, bingo, dessert -- The Ladies Auxiliary of VFW Post 8097, 7209 Montevideo Road, Jessup, will sponsor a bingo, lunch and bake sale today. Lunch will be served from noon to 1 p.m. Bingo will be available from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., and the bake sale will go on until all the treats are sold. 410-799-5868.

Closed -- Patuxent Research Refuge's National Wildlife Visitor Center is closed for repairs through mid-March. The center's heating and ventilation systems are to be repaired. The grounds and visitor trails will continue to be open from sunrise to 4:30 p.m. except some weekdays, tomorrow to Nov. 20, when the parking lot will be restriped and the entrance road repaired. Visitors are advised to call ahead because repairs are contingent on the weather. A "Deadhead Walk," for ages 12 and older to identify seed heads and other phenomena, is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. today at the North Tract. 301-497-5763.

At the library -- The Savage Library, 9525 Durness Lane, invites those ages 13 to 17 to add their voices to an online newsletter written by teens for teens. Those interested in participating in "Teen 'Zine" will meet from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday at the library. Registration is not required. 410-880- 5980. "Chanbara Excitement," a karate program with Kevin McMurtry, will be offered at 7 p.m. Nov. 20. The 45-minute program is for ages 6 to 10. Registration begins Nov. 13. 410-880-5978.

Holiday fair -- The South Laurel Recreation Council will hold its 32nd holiday craft fair from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 11 at Deerfield Run Community Center, 13000 Laurel-Bowie Road, Laurel. Artists and artisans will display and sell their work and accept commissions. Door prizes, refreshments, bake sales and lunch will be available. Registration will be open for the council's holiday workshops for children, teens, adults and families. Admission and parking are free. Craft, vendor show -- The Savage Volunteer Fire Company's Ladies Auxiliary will sponsor a craft and vendor show from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dec. 1 at the fire hall, 6925 Lincoln St. Lunch and bake-table treats will be available.
