Marines on trial for killings

A Marine lieutenant colonel and a lance corporal have been ordered to stand trial on charges stemming from the killing of 24 civilians in Haditha, Iraq, in 2005, the Marine Corps announced yesterday. Of eight initial defendants in the case, the two are the only ones who have been ordered to court-martial. pg 5A


Bhutto defiant after attack

A defiant Benazir Bhutto donned a black armband yesterday and vowed not to be deterred from her quest to bring civilian rule to Pakistan after a suicide attack on her homecoming celebration killed up to 136 supporters. pg 9A

Canadian manhunt ends

A three-year global manhunt for a Canadian schoolteacher suspected of sexually abusing Asian boys ended yesterday when police raided a house in northeastern Thailand off the usual tourist trail and arrested Christopher Paul Neil. Police tracked Neil to the house in Nakhon Ratchasima province that he shared with a Thai friend whose phone calls were traced by authorities. pg 12A


Teen dies after drug use

Most thought that Justin Warfield's acceptance to the prestigious Rider University's Westminster Choir College in Princeton, N.J., was the next step in his ascension to musical excellence. Instead, on Wednesday the 18-year-old freshman music composition major died of an apparent heroin overdose. pg 1B

A professional development day produced an unexpected closed-door meeting yesterday between city schools officials and representatives from the Baltimore Teachers Union, but the parties failed to agree on a contract and remain at an impasse over planning time. pg 6B

Unemployment rises in Md.

Unemployment rose to 3.9 percent in Maryland last month, the Labor Department said yesterday. The increase from 3.7 percent in August was driven by an influx of people entering the work force, some of whom couldn't find a job, according to government numbers adjusted for seasonal variations. pg 10C
