A soldier who was shot and wounded by an Aberdeen police officer last month has been charged with first- and second-degree assault, police said yesterday.

Evan Chandler Parker, 20, of Fairport, N.Y., who was absent without leave when the shooting occurred, is being held without bail at the Harford County Detention Center.

On Sept. 17, Parker held a gun and ignored an Aberdeen police officer's order to drop it at Ken's Motel in the 600 block of S. Philadelphia Road. When Parker waved the gun in a threatening manner, the officer fired several shots, Aberdeen police said.

Police discovered that Parker was holding a replica "air soft" weapon, which is similar to a BB gun and shoots rubber projectiles.

Parker was treated at Maryland Shock Trauma Center and then transferred to Walter Reed Army Medical Center. The military released him to police custody Wednesday, and he was charged, said Sgt. Fred Budnick, Aberdeen police spokesman.

Parker participated in his bond review in District Court yesterday via a video link from the detention center, where he was shackled to a seat.

"I'm a U.S. soldier on active duty stationed at APG," Parker told the judge, explaining why he should be released to the military. "I would be in custody of the U.S. Army."

Judge Angela M. Eaves denied bond for Parker until he undergoes a competency examination.
