A 32-year-old felon from Baltimore received a decade-long prison sentence yesterday in federal court for possessing a gun.

U.S. District Judge Catherine C. Blake sentenced Cornell Vincent, 32, to the prison term followed by three years of supervised release after he was convicted of being a felon in possession of a firearm.

According to testimony presented by prosecutors at his trial, Baltimore police officers saw Vincent on March 4, 2005, coming out of an alley and drinking an alcoholic beverage. As the officers approached Vincent, authorities said he walked onto the porch of a home in the 300 block of Monastery Ave. and attempted to open the door. As officers called out to him and continued to approach, Vincent began knocking on the door and reached into his right jacket pocket, according to police testimony.

When the door of the home opened, Vincent ran into the house, pulling a handgun from his right jacket pocket, authorities said. Officers followed Vincent into the basement of the home, where he was arrested. Officers said they recovered a loaded .38-caliber revolver from Vincent's jacket.
