A Baltimore police officer and the driver of a sport utility vehicle were treated for non-life-threatening injuries last night after the SUV dragged the officer and the officer shot the driver, a city police spokesman said.

About 7:30 p.m., two plainclothes officers in a marked police car in the 5500 block of Woodmont Ave., Woodbourne Heights, stopped a Ford Explorer they believed to be stolen, said Agent Donny Moses, the spokesman. They identified themselves as police officers and asked the driver to turn off the engine, but he instead stepped on the accelerator, Moses said.

One officer became caught on the vehicle and was dragged several hundred feet before he fired a shot, grazing the driver's neck, Moses said. The SUV then crashed into a parked car.

The driver was taken to Johns Hopkins Hospital and the officer to Maryland Shock Trauma Center, Moses said. The driver does not own the SUV, but it had not been reported stolen, Moses said.

Homicide detectives are investigating, as they would any police-involved shooting, Moses said.

This was the 27th police-involved shooting this year, Moses said. Nine were fatal, according to news reports.
