The inmate who was fatally stabbed Monday outside his cell at the Baltimore Detention Center has been identified as Darius Solers, officials from the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services said yesterday.

Solers, 27, of Baltimore was attacked in a walkway area about noon and was taken to Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he died. He had been awaiting trial on drug distribution charges.

Spokesman Mark Vernarelli said the department's Internal Investigative Unit has 15 detectives assigned to the case, including two from the state police. Investigators have interviewed more than 100 people and are trying to determine a motive for the killing.

The stabbing comes after an incident Sept. 23 in which three inmates were stabbed during a fight. All survived.
