Long drives, two field goals

San Francisco finally scrabbled together a first down, but the Ravens' defense continued to lock down the 49ers. The Ravens put together two long drives (14 plays on one and 11 plays on the other) to get two field goals from kicker Matt Stover.

49ers get quick-strike TD

Stover converted another field goal - a season-long 49-yarder - but the 49ers needed just four plays and 1 minute, 58 seconds to cut the lead to two. Quarterback Trent Dilfer completed three passes for 68 yards, including a 23-yard strike to wide receiver Arnaz Battle in the end zone.

Ball control clinches win

Neither team scored, but the key was the Ravens offense's ability to maintain possession of the ball and eat the clock. The Ravens kept the ball for 11:03, and the 49ers' only series ended at the Ravens' 34 when kicker Joe Nedney's 52-yard field-goal attempt sailed wide right with 2:37 left in the game.
