Fallston gave coach Alyson Cammann the kind of complete effort she has been looking for this season.
Monica Fischer got a goal and an assist, and Molly Taylor added a goal as No. 9 Fallston jumped on top early and rolled to a 2-0 girls soccer victory over No. 7 C. Milton Wright last night.
The victory probably ends C.M. Wright's run as the Upper Chesapeake Bay Athletic Conference champion. The visiting Mustangs had won the first three UCBAC championships, but this loss puts them in a tough spot.
Fallston improved to 9-0-1 overall, and the Cougars are now 3-0 in the Chesapeake Division with three games left. C.M. Wright fell to 7-2-1 overall and 2-2 in the division. The Mustangs have two games remaining.
Fallston controlled the game for long stretches and outplayed C.M. Wright, especially in the second half.
"The team that possesses the ball is the team that wins," Cammann said. "Tonight, we possessed it. We came out strong, and we played 80 minutes tonight."
C.M. Wright came in after losing to Bel Air earlier in the week and appeared flat in the first several minutes, something the Cougars took advantage of, scoring quickly.
Fischer set up the first goal in the game's fourth minute. From the right side, she sent a high ball across the box that Taylor headed past goalie Allison Kuchar.
"It helped a lot, and it got us going," Fischer said. "It lifted our team, and it pushed us forward."
Fischer came through again later, scoring with just over seven minutes left in the half. Penelope Santis sent a through ball that let Fischer break in all alone and beat Kuchar from about 8 yards out with a low shot.
C.M. Wright had been pressuring for several minutes before that, but it seemed as if the second goal deflated the Mustangs. They had only one shot on goal in the second half, and that didn't come until the final few minutes.
Fallston goalie Marissa Hyde made seven of her eight saves in the first half, including a few spectacular stops that helped the Cougars stay on top.
C.M. Wright coach Paul Austin pulled Kuchar after the first half and went to backup Lynn Tranovich, who made five saves in a strong second-half performance. Austin said he wanted to shake things up and give Tranovich a shot, and she responded well.
