Notre Dame student is history finalist

Niki Johnson, a junior at College of Notre Dame of Maryland who is from Colora, Cecil County, was named a finalist in the Gilder Lehrman History Scholars Program.

She participated in a weeklong program focusing on the abolition of the international slave trade in New York. The program included lectures by leading American history scholars, visits to historical sites (including an African burial ground) and discussions on careers for history majors.

Johnson is double-majoring in history and business at College of Notre Dame. She is a member of the Morrissy Honors Program and Phi Alpha Theta (history honor society), and is vice president of Eta Sigma Phi (classical honor society).

She also is a member of the Gettysburg Battlefield Preservation Association and has been a Civil War re-enactor with the 11th Virginia Cavalry.

Christie Greer wins McCormick award

Christie Greer of Bel Air has been awarded a McCormick & Co. Inc. 2007-2008 scholarship.

Scholarship winners will receive up to $12,000 per academic year while attending an accredited college or university. Winners are children of McCormick employees and are chosen by an independent committee of representatives from local colleges and universities.

Greer is the daughter of Lisa Greer, specifications analyst for the U.S. Consumer Products Division in Hunt Valley.

A graduate of Bel Air High School, Christie was a member of the National Honor Society, a Minds in Motion Scholar Athlete Honoree, and a Distinguished Honors Recipient. She attends Villa Julie College and plans a career in nursing.

Stancills endows Cecil College award

Stancills Inc. of Perryville has donated $85,000 to the Cecil College Foundation Inc. to establish the Stancill Wulkow Endowed Scholarship.

The need-based scholarship will provide financial assistance to a female head of household who is a nontraditional student.

Funds may be used for tuition and fees, books or supplies at the college bookstore, and for dependent care provided by a licensed facility during classes and related activities.

Founded in 1934, Stancills Inc. is a family-owned and -operated mining and manufacturing company.
