Fallston's Rachel Cooke didn't think she had played well before yesterday's field hockey game at C. Milton Wright headed into overtime. She felt a lot better a few minutes later.
Cooke scored with 2:41 left in the second sudden-death overtime period to give No. 5 Fallston a 2-1 victory over No. 11 C.M. Wright in an Upper Chesapeake Bay Athletic Conference game.
Fallston (7-1, 2-0) held a 14-5 edge in penalty corners but had problems finishing. But coach Alice Puckett pulled out a different play when the Cougars got a corner with about three minutes left in the second seven-on-seven overtime.
Cooke started the play by sending the ball to Allison Sibiski. But instead of shooting or passing toward goal, Sibiski quickly passed back to Cooke, standing alone about 10 yards from goal. Cooke fired a shot past goalie Kate Vitali to trigger a Fallston celebration.
"That's the play we've been practicing for overtime," Cooke said. "We finally pulled it off. I didn't think I'd have that much room."
Vitali and C.M. Wright (5-2, 1-1) made Fallston earn the win. The senior goalie made 15 saves, and Liz Johnson, Amanda Malkowski, Kim Schnell and Kristin Tracy anchored a strong Mustangs defensive effort.
Just 4:31 into the game, Sara Naguib redirected Malkowski's long ball past Megan Sadowski for a 1-0 C.M. Wright lead. But Fallston answered with pressure for several minutes and tied it on Krissy Fusco's goal with 28 seconds left in the half.
Despite the loss, the Mustangs still felt pretty good.
"We know we're a skilled team," Naguib said. "We can say we went into double overtime with Fallston and didn't give up."
Long Reach 2, No. 6 Mount Hebron 1 -- Paul Lee scored in double overtime to lift the Lightning (1-2-2) over the Vikings (3-2-1). Josh Chelleh scored a goal and assisted on the game-winner for Long Reach.
