Blue Jays update
Like other teams out of contention, the Blue Jays tried to influence a pennant race yesterday by beating a club that's still alive. They defeated the New York Yankees, 4-1, to move two games above .500. Toronto was eliminated from wild-card contention Wednesday. The Blue Jays won five of their past seven games, and seven of 11. Pitcher Shaun Marcum will undergo surgery tomorrow to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee. That's the 11th surgery for a Toronto player this year, and former Orioles catcher Sal Fasano will be No. 12 this week when he has a procedure to "clean up" his left knee. Burres should know that the Blue Jays are 25-17 against left-handed starters this season after defeating Andy Pettitte yesterday. They began yesterday batting .296 against them.
