THE GREAT NORTHFIELD MINNESOTA RAID

Universal / $14.98

The Great Northfield Minnesota Raid is a great, original Western with seductive regional twangs and headlong wit and invention. Writer-director Philip Kaufman (The Right Stuff) wrote the screenplay in 1968 and got to film it three years later; Universal didn't release it until 1972, after films like Sam Peckinpah's The Wild Bunch and Robert Altman's McCabe & Mrs. Miller broke the form wide open. This film stands nobly and raffishly in their company.

KNOCKED UP

Universal / $29.98

The summer smash about an E! TV host (Katherine Heigl) who gets pregnant during a drunken one-night stand with a would-be Web site designer (Seth Rogen) holds up on DVD as a hilarious demonstration that even men who are from Mars can worship women as if they're Venus. Heigl carries the movie with her humor and sweetness - you believe she would keep the baby and try to love the father. In the "collector's edition" extras, a parade of extended and deleted scenes point up director Judd Apatow's skill at using improvisation to turn classic male and female insecurities into fresh and riotous set pieces.
