Data on students can be disclosed

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act authorizes local school systems to disclose information from the educational records of a student that is designated as "directory information."

The information includes basic biographical information but not grades, test results, or academic or discipline records.

Included are the student's name, address, telephone number, date of birth, major field of study, participation in school activities, weight and height for athletes, dates of school attendance, degrees and awards, and previous educational institutions attended.

Maryland law permits public school systems to release a student's home address and phone number to organizations of parents, teachers, students or former students at the school, such as PTAs, booster clubs and class reunion committees; the military (for example, military recruiters); a representative of a community college in the state; or a representative of the Maryland Higher Education Commission.

Parents who want to restrict the release of any such information are required to complete and sign a parental option form for each child. The forms were distributed during the first week of school.

Information: 410-313-6682.
