South River's No. 3 field hockey team scored two early goals on penalty strokes, and they held up for a 2-1 victory over No. 4 Broadneck last night in an Anne Arundel County league game.
Thanks to the Bruins' misfortune and Brooke Griffin and Shannon Denno's accurate shooting, the Seahawks (5-0, 3-0 county) took a 2-0 lead with about 11 minutes left in the first half.
Griffin's stroke, a low shot into her left-side corner, came after her previous shot bounced high off the grass and hit the body of a Bruins player defending the goal line. Denno chose to go high left after a stroke was awarded when the ball got wedged against Bruins goalie Madeline Koch as she held off several attackers from the ground.
"It really set the tone for us," Griffin said of her stroke. "We practice them a lot, and I knew where I was going to go. I just stayed calm and hit the corner. It really gave us confidence and pumped us up."
Nine minutes into the second half, Broadneck's Bridgette Strother pushed the first goal of the season past the Seahawks, who had outscored the opposition 26-0 to that point.
The Seahawks have gone eight straight meetings without a loss to Broadneck (5-1, 2-1). The teams tied 2-2 in their 2005 regular-season game, but the Bruins haven't won since 2002.
No. 3 Severna Park 1, No. 12 Arundel 0 -- Senior midfielder Faith Johnson scored on a corner kick in the 55th minute to lead the host Falcons (3-1) past the Wildcats in Anne Arundel County play. Johnson bent a left-footed corner kick that deflected off the head of a defender and into the goal. Arundel (2-1) pressed for the equalizer in the final 25 minutes but encountered an organized defensive effort. The Falcons received a strong game from junior midfielder Jenny Thornton, while many of the Wildcats' chances came from junior forward Megan Frost.
No. 14 Severna Park 5, No. 7 Arundel 0 -- J.D. Kershaw scored two goals for the Falcons (4-1) in a victory over the Wildcats (1-2). Peter Zingler, Mike Rose and Sean Bunoski also scored goals for Severna Park.
